Trezor.io/Start® — Starting Up Your Device
Follow this secure, step-by-step guide to get your Trezor® hardware wallet ready — from unboxing to your first transaction.
Quick checklist before you begin
- Make sure you are on a private, trusted network.
- Only use official Trezor software: trezor.io/start
- Have a pen and the supplied recovery card ready — never store your recovery seed digitally.
- Never share your PIN or recovery seed with anyone.
Step-by-step setup
-
1
Unbox & inspect your device
Check the tamper-evident seal and make sure the packaging is intact. Verify the model on the box against your order confirmation.
-
2
Navigate to the official start page
On a computer you trust, open a browser and go to trezor.io/start. This page will guide you to download the correct official software.
-
3
Install official companion app (if prompted)
Follow on-screen instructions to install the official Trezor Suite or browser integration. Only download from the official site. If your device requires a firmware update, the app will guide you — firmware updates are signed and verified by Trezor.
-
4
Connect your Trezor & verify the screen
Connect via USB (or USB-C), and confirm that messages shown on the device screen match what you see in the app. Trezor displays important information on-device to prevent remote tampering.
-
5
Create a new wallet & set a PIN
Choose a PIN on-device. The PIN protects physical access to your wallet. Pick a PIN you can remember — but don’t store it digitally.
-
6
Write down your recovery seed
Your recovery seed (usually 12, 18 or 24 words) is the single most critical backup. Write it by hand on the supplied card. Store it in a safe location and never photograph or type it into any device.
-
7
Verify your recovery on-device
The Suite or device will optionally ask you to confirm a few words to ensure the seed was recorded correctly. Only confirm on the device screen.
-
8
Add accounts & receive your first funds
Use the app to add cryptocurrency accounts (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Receive a small test amount first to ensure everything works as expected.
Security best practices
- Never enter your recovery seed into any website, phone, email, or cloud storage.
- Only download firmware and apps from trezor.io. Beware of phishing sites and fake downloads.
- Consider using a steel backup plate or geographically separated backups for high-value holdings.
- Keep your firmware up to date; updates include security improvements.
